World Book Week

Date Posted: Monday 18 March 2024

Students and pupils across the School Divisions were treated to various author talks throughout World Book Week, organised by our Prep Librarian, Ms Adams, and supported by Senior Librarian, Mrs Hammett.

To begin the World Book Week celebrations, pupils in Years 3 and 4 enjoyed a visit from Chrissie Sains, who gave an assembly all about her journey to becoming an author and inspirations for her debut series of her Jam Factory series of books (she lived next to Tiptree Jam Factory as a child!). Chrissie signed books and spent lunchtime in the Library chatting with pupils.

Students from Years 5 to 7 were visited by Tola Okogwu, an award-winning British-Nigerian children’s author and journalist and author of the Onyeka superhero book series. Tola spoke to students about her writing process, where she finds her inspiration, and who her real-life heroes are. The students heard about how Onyeka was created and what happens in the very first book. She spoke about her craft, her inspiration, her journey as an author and the importance of being yourself.  She brought her ideas to life and the children responded very enthusiastically. We are very excited about the next instalment coming out next week!

The final author visit was from Annemarie Anang, actor, musician and now author, had pupils in Pre-School right through to Year 2 enthralled by her music, singing and storytelling. In the workshops, Annemarie shared her debut picture book I am Nefertiti from which we learned about the power held within our names. Annemarie introduced us to some of the instruments mentioned in her book; the marimba, kalimba and ukulele!

There was a buzz about the Divisions in anticipation of our World Book Day celebrations on Friday 8 March.  It was wonderful to see the students and staff in their colourful and imaginative costumes. Principal Mrs Jeffrey commented on how strange it was to sit in a meeting, having a serious discussion with an armadillo and Bilbo Baggins! As well as World Book Day itself, the pupils in the Prep Divisions enjoyed a fun-filled week with lots of reading and book-based activities, including a scavenger hunt.  This involved the pupils visiting every classroom door, (which had been decorated by the teachers) to collect information about different authors.
