Vertical Houses
At New Hall, students belong to one of six vertical houses, which form communities and help to create a sense of belonging.
Weekly house meetings provide opportunities for interaction between students from different year groups, enabling students to learn from the experiences of their peers. The house system also helps to foster a healthy spirit of competition between students, as well as giving them the chance to appreciate one another’s talents and abilities.
Opportunities for leadership are also offered through the prefect role of House Captain, enabling Year 13 students to develop a wide range of skills.
ACUTIS
Blessed Carlo Acutis (Acutis House)
Carlo Acutis was born in 1991 and is the first millennial to be beatified by the Catholic Church. He was an English-born Italian Catholic youth and amateur computer programmer, who is best known for documenting Eucharistic miracles around the world and cataloguing them onto a website that he created before his death from leukaemia.

St Augustine of Hippo (Augustine House)
St. Augustine was the Bishop of Hippo (now Annaba, Algeria) from 396 to 430. A renowned theologian and prolific writer, he was also a skilled preacher and rhetorician. Augustine’s adaptation of classical thought to Christian teaching created a theological system of great power and lasting influence. He is one of the Latin Fathers of the Church and, in Roman Catholicism, is formally recognised as a doctor of the church.

BAKHITA
St Josephine Bakhita (Bakhita House)
Josephine Margaret Bakhita was a Sudanese-Italian Canossian religious sister who lived in Italy for 45 years, after having been a slave in Sudan. Despite her early trauma, she was a source of encouragement to others and her constant smile won people’s hearts, as did her humility and simplicity. In 2000, she was declared a Saint by the Catholic Church.

St Paul Miki (Miki House)
Paul Miki was the son of a Japanese military leader. He was born at Tounucumada, Japan, was educated at the Jesuit college of Anziquiama, joined the Jesuits in 1580, and became known for his eloquent preaching. He was crucified with twenty-five other Catholics during the persecution of Christians. After their crucifixion, Paul Miki and his companions became known as the Martyrs of Nagasaki. Before he died, Paul forgave those who persecuted him. He said, “Ask Christ to help you become happy.” The Church honours Paul Miki and his example helps us to remember that making God part of our lives is the only way to true happiness.

Oscar Romero was the Archbishop of San Salvador from 1977 until he was assassinated in 1980. He was initially regarded as a conservative choice as archbishop, but he became increasingly outspoken about human rights violations in El Salvador. He didn’t simply talk about the need to love your neighbour, but courageously named the injustices that plagued his country. He reminds us that Christ is found in people living in poverty and that we cannot ignore the suffering of those in need.

It is believed that she decided she wanted to become a missionary in India as early as the age of 12. Mother Teresa was the founder of the Order of the Missionaries of Charity, a Catholic congregation of women dedicated to the poor, particularly to the destitute of India. Her charitable efforts have been widely celebrated and recognised all over the planet. She was invited to speak at both the United Nations General Assembly and the Vatican. She was the recipient of numerous honours, including the 1979 Nobel Prize for Peace.
