Not Just Toast! | Pre-University Cookery Course

Date Posted: Friday 28 February 2025

Not Just Toast! has officially landed at New Hall, and it has been nothing short of a whirlwind of fun and learning! This week, the Cookery Department kicked off a brand-new pre-university course tailored specifically for our Year 13 students. The aim of the course is to equip students with essential life skills as they prepare for life beyond New Hall.  The focus is on practical skills that will help them thrive in their future independent living—ranging from cooking simple meals, maintaining a clean and organized kitchen, managing hygiene standards, and most importantly, learning how to share a common space harmoniously.

The course began with an introduction to fundamental kitchen techniques, including various chopping methods.  It has been an engaging and hands-on start, with each session designed to build confidence and competence in the kitchen.  This week, the Year 13 students had the pleasure of preparing a delicious and comforting carrot and ginger soup—a perfect blend of warmth and flavour.

In the coming weeks, our students will continue to master other staple dishes, developing both their culinary skills and their understanding of kitchen etiquette.  It is a fantastic opportunity for them to gain practical knowledge that will serve them well as they embark on their next chapter.  Stay tuned for more delicious creations and exciting culinary adventures!
