Alumni vs New Hall 1st XI Cricket Match
Date Posted: Monday 01 July 2024
On Thursday 27 June, we hosted our annual alumni cricket match on a beautiful evening on Six Acres. It was wonderful to see a team of 14 Old Fishes return to play, as well as many Old Fishes as spectators, supporting the alumni team.
After the coin toss by Tom Debenham (2014-2021) and Christian R (Year 13), the Old Fishes batted first and got off to a fast start with Nathan Khelawon (2014-2021) scoring a quick fire 49. Other contributions of 36 from Ben Carson (2013-2020) and 23 for Joe Carson (2017-2021) got them up to 148 from their 20 overs. Three wickets in the powerplay for current Year 13 student Will H made it very even but tight bowling from New Hall’s 1st XI team, alongside regular wickets, saw New Hall keep the Old Fishes to a manageable total.
A swift start saw New Hall on course at the halfway stage. But the regular loss of wickets took the match down to the final over, with one required for a tie and two for the win from the final two balls. Will O (Year 12) snuck a single off the penultimate ball, leaving it to James K (Year 12) to hit the winning run and see New Hall win by just one wicket off the final ball of the match.
There was much support for the Old Fishes’ team, both in numbers and encouragement throughout the game. It was a wonderful evening for alumni to return and socialise with old classmates over a barbeque at the cricket pavilion, and to see some familiar faces within the staff who attended the game.
It truly was a brilliant evening, and we look forward to hosting next year’s event!
