Inspiring Young Pianists: New Digital Piano Programme Launches at New Hall School

Date Posted: Thursday 19 March 2026

An exciting new programme of piano tuition has been launched in the Preparatory Division at New Hall School, giving all pupils in Years 3 and 4 the opportunity to learn the piano as part of their weekly curriculum. As part of the programme, each class receives one hour of piano tuition a week, ensuring that all pupils can participate and develop their musical skills together.

The programme uses a suite of high-quality Yamaha digital pianos with weighted keys, complete with adjustable stools and pedals. This professional set-up provides pupils with an authentic piano experience, distinguishing it from learning on a standard keyboard. By working with weighted keys and pedals from the outset, pupils develop correct posture, touch, and technique, laying a strong foundation for future musical study.

Mrs Katherine Jeffrey, Principal, said: “An outstanding Music provision has been at the heart of New Hall for centuries. At a time when music is under pressure in many schools, we are dedicated to innovation and excellence, making music lessons accessible to all families and maximising the benefits of music making for Prep pupils. As an accredited school of the Royal College of Organists, a proud member of the Choir Schools’ Association, and home to the community choir Beaulieu Park Singers, music is central to everything we do and integral to our students’ education and development.”

Mr Turner, Director of Music, said: “We are delighted to introduce a programme that enables all pupils to learn on weighted instruments, developing strong technique and musicianship in an engaging and inclusive way. The cognitive benefits of learning an instrument are well established, and we see this programme as an important driver of wider academic progress. By enhancing focus, resilience and independent thinking, it will no doubt support higher attainment across the curriculum while enriching every pupil’s musical experience.”

The initiative complements the school’s wider Musical Instrumental Scheme, through which pupils in Year 3 have the opportunity to try six different instruments before choosing one to specialise in during Year 4. New Hall School is also accredited by the Royal College of Organists. The digital piano scheme provides not only a strong grounding in musicianship and technique, but also a potential first step for those who may wish to progress to organ playing in the future.

The launch of the digital piano scheme further strengthens the Preparatory Divisions’ commitment to providing an inspiring and accessible musical education for every pupil.
