383rd Foundation Day
Date Posted: Wednesday 08 October 2025
On Wednesday, we came together to celebrate Foundation Day, marking an incredible 383 years since our school was founded by the Canonesses of the Holy Sepulchre. For our Years 3-13 students, the day began with Mass, featuring a historical display, blessing of the House pennants, and some of our New Hall community’s favourite hymns, as well as some new favourites. The singing was magnificent, and the rendition of “Christ Be Our Light” was particularly moving. We were delighted to be joined by Sr Moira and Sr Margaret Mary from the Colchester community of the Canonesses of the Holy Sepulchre, representing our trailblazing founders, without whom our wonderful School community would not exist. This year is a special year, as it marks the founding of our onsite Mission House. To strengthen our partnership with the Canonesses’ community in Rwanda, we extended a warm welcome to four Canonesses from Rwanda, who moved into the Mission House at New Hall, and will be part of our Community, perfecting their English and supporting our Chaplaincy Department.
Later in the day, the Pre-Prep and Prep pupils gathered in the Denford Hall, and the Senior Houses gathered in the Sports Hall for traditional inter-house singing competitions. We heard speeches from House Captains, who spoke beautifully about the origins of our Houses. The Singing Competitions were an explosion of colour, creativity, and joyful noise! From dance routines to musical solos and impressive costumes, every student (and staff member!) contributed with enthusiasm. All were cheering on other Houses with a kindness and pride which perfectly reflects our School values. Congratulations, however, go to St Mark House in the Prep and Acutis House in the Senior Divisions, this year’s winners!
