A Level Trip to Paris
Date Posted: Friday 07 March 2025
On Thursday 27 February, A Level French students and their teachers Mr Boudon and Mrs McLaren boarded a School minibus headed for Paris. One of the themes covered in the A Level syllabus is life under the Occupation and the Resistance – the aim of this trip was to bring life to this challenging topic. Albeit only four days, this trip boasted an impressive schedule of visits and activities.
The journey began with a rare opportunity to explore the Élysée Palace, the very heart of French governance. Although the presidential couple was away on a state visit, it was impressive and jaw dropping to walk through the many sumptuous salons, usually filled with heads of state or other people of power.
This theme of influence and legacy continued at the Petit Palais, where an art exhibition showcased works spanning various movements and styles.
The itinerary then led the group to the Liberation of Paris Museum, a poignant reminder of the city’s resilience during one of the most defining moments of the 20th century. Through immersive displays and firsthand accounts, students gained a deeper understanding of the strategic and emotional weight of the city’s liberation in 1944. The visit sparked meaningful discussions about resistance, sacrifice, and the enduring spirit of the French people.
A particularly solemn and thought-provoking experience awaited at the Mémorial de la Shoah. There, the students were confronted with the harrowing realities of the Holocaust, engaging with powerful narratives which highlighted the necessity of remembrance. The visit to Mont-Valérien, a fortress where 1,003 prisoners or Résistants were shot, further reinforced these reflections, as the site stands as a solemn tribute to those who paid the ultimate price for their defiance against oppression.
The students also enjoyed the opportunity to explore some of Paris’s most iconic landmarks. Ascending the Eiffel Tower and seeing the breathtaking views, and exploring the gardens at Versailles, with their meticulously designed landscapes and regal atmosphere, offered a glimpse into the past. A moment of tranquillity was found within the hallowed walls of Notre Dame, the students immersing themselves in the spiritual and historical significance of this revered cathedral. As the journey drew to a close, the group ventured to Montmartre, a district synonymous with artistic vibrancy. Over traditional crêpes and amidst the stunning backdrop of the Basilica of Sacré-Cœur, the students reflected on the breadth of experiences encountered over the past few days.
From the corridors of power to the echoes of resistance and artistic marvels to architectural splendour, the experience offered an unparalleled fusion of education and exploration.
