Geography
"Geography is a living, breathing subject, constantly adapting itself to change. It is dynamic and relevant. For me geography is a great adventure with a purpose." - Michael Palin
Ethos
At New Hall, the Geography department seeks to immerse students in the physical and human world around them. The study of Geography is to investigate some of the most crucial challenges facing humanity today. We aim to foster an understanding of these issues through a rigorous and engaging curriculum, as well as vibrant co-curricular programme. Trips form a central part of our ethos, as we believe there is no better classroom than the world around us. Our aim is to create well-rounded, knowledgeable and inquisitive individuals who can inspire and engage the next generation in the solutions of the future.
Geography at a Glance
Key Stage 3 curriculum:
In Year 7 and 8, we develop a solid foundation in geographical knowledge, understanding and skills which are developed and built upon in each subsequent academic year. Students study a range of Physical and Human Geography including Biomes, Geography of Disease, Climate Change and Resources. Embedded within the curriculum is the development of students’ geographical skills, such as 4- and 6-figure grid references, compass directions and fieldwork techniques.
GCSE AQA Curriculum (8035):
Our Geography Community
Geography Society – The Geography Department has an academic society that encourages students to explore areas of the subject they are passionate about. We also seek to spark a lifelong interest in the subject with a particular focus on further study of Geography at university.
Annual events – The Geography Department regularly seeks to mark current events and current geographical affairs occurring around the world. Last year the department ran a fortnight of activities to raise awareness and engagement in COP26 summit held in Glasgow.
Co-Curricular Opportunities and Trips
In Geography we believe the best way our students can learn about the theory is to experience it first-hand. We aim to provide numerous trip opportunities in every year group. Our extensive trip schedule comprises:
Year 7 – Geocaching
Year 8 – Walton-on-the-Naze
Year 9 – Olympic Park, Stratford
Year 10 – Walton on the Naze
Year 11 – Chelmsford
We also seek to deliver inspiring international trips. In October 2022 the Department, took a number of students to Iceland.
