Drama is a curriculum subject for all students in Years 7-9. Students study a wide range of topics including mime, mask, Ancient Greek Theatre, Shakespeare, stage craft, Commedia Dell ‘Arte and a variety of scripts. Lessons are taught in purpose built studios where students have access to professional lighting and sound equipment in order to aid their learning. Assessments take place every half term and involve working practically in a group.
Drama is available as a GCSE option and Drama & Theatre Studies as an option at AS and A2. We follow the OCR exam board at GCSE and Edexcel at A Level. Students can either be assessed through performance or performance support (covering lighting, set, costume, mask, sound design and directing). We ensure all students have a grounding in a variety of practitioners, including Stanislavski, Brecht, Berkoff and Artaud. Students will also experience a wide range of styles including working with techniques used by Frantic Assembly and DV8.
In 2015, 100% of students achieved A*-B grades at GCSE; 75% of students achieved A*-B grades at A Level.
In 2014, New Hall’s entry into the National Theatre Connections competition with "Socialism is Great" received excellent feedback from industry professionals and was named as the best in the Eastern area.
Many of our students achieve places at the National Youth Theatre, National Youth Music Theatre, Arts Ed, Guildhall and other drama schools.
There are a variety of trips to London and surrounding theatres to see a wide selection of theatre including Kneehigh, Complicite, 1927, Forced Entertainment, Frantic Assembly and DV8. There are also workshops from visiting professionals and the opportunity to enter local and national drama competitions. There is also a Year 7 Drama club which works with senior students later in the year, who wish to gain experience in directing. There is also a Tech Club for aspiring technicians.
Three productions take place throughout the year, which last year saw students perform ‘Beauty & the Beast’, a senior school production of ‘Dahling You Were Marvellous’ and a KS3 production of ‘Grimm Tales’. This year, 'Oliver' will be the main Senior School production.
