Cricket

Cricket is the major sport for boys in the Trinity Term and an option for boys in the Lent Term. The sport is by Mr Paul Davidge, a former county, MCC and Australian A Grade cricketer. Paul, an ECB level 3 coach with a master's in High-Performance Coaching, works with numerous counties, including Essex, on their EPP and Wicket Keeping programmes. New Hall’s Cricket Professional is former Essex Cricketer and England Captain Nasser Hussain OBE.

Facilities

New Hall has four cricket grass squares, with our 1st XI ("Six Acres") set against the stunning backdrop of the main school building. This area also has the main pavilion as well as four state of the art outdoor nets. The school and its students also benefit from two indoor cricket lanes and fielding/fitness space in our multi-purpose Sports Hall.

Fixtures and Competitions

Fixtures take place during midweek games sessions and on Saturdays with a comprehensive fixture list for all age groups and abilities throughout the Trinity Term for boys and girls. We aim to ensure each team has a challenging fixture programme that will allow pupils to compete against some of the best teams in the region. Block fixtures are played regularly against Bancroft’s School, Forest School, Haileybury, The Royal Hospital School, Whitgift School, Caterham School and St Josephs, Ipswich to name but a few.
Teams are entered into the Essex Schools and National Cups at U12A, 13A, 14A, 15A and 1st XI level.
The highlight of the school calendar is our Cricket Week held here at New Hall. This week hosts two Junior T20 festivals and our 1st XI against the MCC and Old Boys XI.

Tours

A touring programme is set for boys’ cricket for all age groups throughout the school. There is an annual weekend UK tour for Year 7 and 8 boys to the South West of England. Since 2010, we have toured bi-annually with our cricket academy group. This has seen us visit the UAE twice to compete in the Schools Arch Trophy as well as a two-week trip to Sri Lanka. Our next tour will see the academy return to Sri Lanka in Easter 2017.

Academy

Academy sessions are run through the Michaelmas and Lent terms for our top achieving pupils within the sport. The idea of the academy is to provide additional cricket training on both a group and individual basis and also develop pupils as athletes, looking at strength and conditioning, nutrition and the mental aspects of elite competition. These pupils receive 1-2-1 sessions throughout the week as well as physical training programmes and an assigned mentor.
